Insights from Nigeria's energy sector leaders
Lagos Section Chairperson
It is with great pride and appreciation that I reflect on the tremendous success of the inaugural SPE Lagos Energy Week—a dynamic convergence of industry leaders, young professionals, innovators, and changemakers committed to shaping the future of Nigeria's energy sector.
Throughout the week, we witnessed thought-provoking conversations and strategic insights from across the industry spectrum. From our Deepwater Session charting the next frontier of Nigeria's offshore development, to the Young Professionals Symposium equipping tomorrow's leaders with tools to thrive—every session reflected our shared commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainability.
At the core of all these engagements was a unifying message: our sector's strength lies in its people. As the energy landscape shifts, it is the willingness to learn, to lead, and to act that will carry us forward.
SPE Africa Regional Director
As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, we must pause and reflect on our role in this transition, especially here in Nigeria. The question before us is not whether change is coming—it is already here. The real question is: how do we, as a nation and as professionals, position ourselves not just to survive, but to thrive?
At the core of it all is human capital. Without investing in people—the engineers, analysts, technicians, and innovators—our ambitions falter. Let's nurture talent, mentor the next generation, and build ecosystems that value learning and innovation.
To the young professionals in the room today: innovation is not born in comfort zones—it is born of curiosity and courage. Those who dare to reimagine the future often become the architects of transformative change.
Key insights and takeaways from each day of the Energy Week
Day 1
"Driving the Next Frontier in Nigeria's Deepwater Development" showcased Nigeria's deepwater legacy with fields like Bonga, Agbami, and Egina contributing over 40% of national crude. The panel featured leaders from SNEPCO, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Oando Energy Resources, and Templars Law, discussing IOC divestments, indigenous opportunities, and upcoming projects.
Key insights included how local firms have boosted onshore production 30–40% post-handover, multi-year hiring programs to combat aging workforces, and the critical importance of collaboration across IOCs and local firms to unlock billions of barrels and 50 TCF of gas reserves.
Day 1
"Building Resilient Careers: Navigating Industry Challenges and Opportunities" equipped young professionals with practical tools for career resilience. Led by keynote speaker Engr. Effiong Okon, the panel emphasized creating structured Individual Development Plans, embracing mentorship, and mastering transferable skills.
Panelists highlighted flexibility, grit, and the importance of continuous learning. Key discussions covered cross-industry learning, ESG upskilling, ethical leadership, local-content gaps, and balancing personal and professional life.
Day 2
"How I Built This" delivered candid lessons from Nigeria's energy builders. Keynote speaker Engr. Dada Thomas shared 45 years of experience through nine success principles: equity, humility, planning, perseverance, passion, belief, value creation, smart/hard work, and teamwork.
The panel focused on shifting from chasing money to creating value, embracing failure as learning, and building trust through delegation. Cost efficiency, customer-centric innovation, and scenario planning emerged as critical strategies for scaling indigenous firms.
Day 2
"Empowering the Present, Securing the Future" celebrated women shaping Nigeria's energy landscape. Led by Patricia Simon Hart, the discussion highlighted the sector's 70% contribution to federal revenue and the urgent need to diversify into gas, solar, and hydropower.
Panelists emphasized grit, mentorship, continuous learning, and bold action. Key advice included building networks via WIEN, pursuing certifications, staying ready for opportunities, and supporting one another through policy advocacy and reskilling in ESG.
