This website is operated by SPE Lagos Section 61 (“SPE Lagos”, “the Section”, “we”, “us”), a section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International. By accessing spelagos.org, creating an account, registering for an event, applying for a job through the job board or paying any fee through this site, you agree to these Terms of Use.

If you do not accept these terms, please do not use the site. Where you use the site in the course of your employment or on behalf of an organisation (for example when registering a company on the job board), you confirm that you are authorised to bind that organisation, and “you” in these terms means both you and it.

Each section below opens with a short plain-English summary. Those summaries are a reading aid only. Where a summary and the clause beneath it differ, the clause governs.

Site

spelagos.org and every page, sub-domain, form and service reachable from it.

Account

The personal login you create at /signup, together with the professional profile, documents and application history attached to it.

Member

An individual whose SPE International membership is current and whose section of record is Lagos Section 61.

Employer

An organisation that has registered on the site in order to list roles on the job board.

Content

Anything you submit through the site: profile details, CVs and certificates, application answers, event documents, form responses, enquiries and messages.

SPE International

The Society of Petroleum Engineers, headquartered in Richardson, Texas, United States, which maintains the global membership register that Lagos Section 61 draws on.

You may browse the public pages of this site freely. To create an account you must be at least 16 years old. Students under 18 may take part in section programmes through a recognised student chapter or with the consent of a parent or guardian; see the Privacy Policy for how we handle information about young people.

Your obligations

• Give accurate, current and complete information when you register, and keep your profile up to date; employers, event organisers and the section office rely on it.
• Choose a password you do not use anywhere else, and keep it confidential.
• Do not share your login, and do not let anyone else apply for roles or register for events under your account.
• Tell the section office at once if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.

You are responsible for everything done through your account until you notify us of a compromise. You may close your account at any time by writing to the section office; closure does not by itself cancel a paid membership year, an event registration or an application already submitted to an employer.

SPE membership is granted and maintained by SPE International, under its own bylaws and membership rules. Lagos Section 61 is the local section through which members in Lagos participate. Paying section dues through this site does not create, renew or upgrade SPE International membership by itself, and an account on this site is not the same thing as a membership record.

Membership benefits offered by the Section (member pricing at events, access to the job board, technical meeting materials, mentoring and committee participation) are available while your membership is current and your section of record is Lagos Section 61. We may verify your standing with SPE International before granting a member benefit or member pricing.

Payments for membership dues, event registration, conference delegate passes and sponsorship are taken through a licensed Nigerian payment gateway. Your card or bank details are entered on the gateway's own secure page and are never stored on, or transmitted through, this site's servers. We receive a payment reference, the amount, the currency and the status of the transaction.

A registration or membership year is confirmed only when the gateway reports the payment as successful and our system has verified it. If you are debited but do not receive a confirmation email within 24 hours, contact the section office with your payment reference before attempting a second payment.

Refunds

Approved refunds are returned to the account originally debited, in naira, within 21 working days. Bank charges and gateway fees are not refundable. Requests must be sent to the section office and must quote the payment reference.

Registration for a technical meeting, workshop, Energy Week session or any other section event is personal to the named registrant. Tickets may not be resold. Where a registration form asks for supporting documents (a student ID, a letter of employment, proof of membership), the registration is provisional until those documents are accepted.

• Speakers, session times, venues and formats may change. We publish changes to the event page and email registrants at the address on the registration.
• Admission may be refused where a ticket cannot be verified, where the venue is at capacity, or where a registrant's conduct at a previous event gives reasonable cause.
• Section events are photographed and sometimes recorded for the newsroom, the annual report and social channels. Tell the organiser on the day if you would prefer not to appear, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
• Views expressed by speakers are their own. A presentation delivered at a section event is not an endorsement by SPE Lagos or SPE International.

Everyone attending a section event is expected to observe the SPE Code of Conduct and to behave professionally and courteously toward other attendees, speakers, volunteers and venue staff. We may remove anyone who does not, without refund.

The job board carries vacancies submitted by employers and recruiters. We review listings before they appear, but we do not verify every statement in them, we do not vouch for any employer, and we are not a party to any recruitment process, offer or contract of employment that follows. Salary figures, benefits, closing dates and role requirements are the employer's representations.

When you apply

• Submitting an application shares your profile, CV and answers with that employer. From that point the employer is an independent controller of your information and handles it under its own privacy notice.
• Applying is not an offer of employment, and nothing on this site guarantees an interview, a response or a role.
• Do not submit an application containing false qualifications, forged certificates or work history you did not perform.

If you list roles

• List only genuine, currently open vacancies for a legally constituted organisation you are authorised to represent.
• Do not post multi-level marketing schemes, unpaid roles described as employment, or listings that require the candidate to pay anything.
• Do not discriminate on any ground prohibited by Nigerian law, and keep your listings free of discriminatory requirements.
• Use candidate information only to assess that candidate for the role applied for, keep it secure, and delete it when your lawful retention period ends.
• We may edit, decline or remove any listing, and suspend any employer account, at our discretion.

You retain all rights in the Content you submit. By submitting it you grant SPE Lagos a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, transmit and display that Content for the purpose of operating the site and providing the service you asked for: showing your profile to an employer you applied to, issuing your event ticket, processing your form response, answering your enquiry. The licence lasts as long as we hold the Content and ends when it is deleted.

Where you submit an abstract, paper, presentation or photograph for publication by the Section (in the newsroom, an event programme or a technical proceedings), you additionally grant us permission to publish and archive it in that context, with attribution to you.

You confirm that your Content

• is yours to submit, and does not infringe anyone else's copyright, trade marks, confidentiality or privacy;
• contains no employer confidential information, well or field data, or commercially sensitive material you are not free to disclose;
• is accurate, and is not misleading about your qualifications, licences or experience;
• contains no malware, and no material that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, obscene or discriminatory.

We may remove Content that breaches these terms. We are not obliged to monitor Content, and we do not endorse it.

The site's design, code, text, graphics, photographs, newsroom articles, technical meeting summaries and compilations are owned by SPE Lagos Section 61 or its licensors and are protected by the Copyright Act 2022 and other applicable law. Photography licensed from third parties remains the property of its owner.

“SPE”, the SPE logo and the Society of Petroleum Engineers name are marks of SPE International. Nothing on this site grants you a licence to use them. Requests to use the Section's name or logo (in a sponsorship announcement, a course listing or a job advert) must be approved in writing by the section office beforehand.

You may read, download and print material from the site for your own professional, academic or personal reference, keeping any notices intact. You may not republish it commercially, scrape or bulk-download it, resell it, or present it as your own work.

You agree not to:

• attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, server or database, or to probe, scan or test the site's security;
• use bots, scrapers or automated tools to collect member details, employer details or job listings from the site;
• introduce malware, or interfere with the site's operation or availability;
• impersonate another person, a company, SPE Lagos, SPE International or any of their officers;
• use the site or any contact details found on it to send unsolicited marketing, chain messages or phishing;
• use the site for anything unlawful, including fraud, money laundering, or the collection of “processing fees” from job seekers;
• reverse engineer any part of the site, or remove or obscure any proprietary notice.

The site links to SPE International, partner universities, sponsors, employer websites and other resources, and relies on third-party providers for payment processing, email delivery, hosting and analytics. We do not control those services, we are not responsible for their content, availability or practices, and a link is not an endorsement. Their own terms and privacy notices apply when you use them.

The site is provided on an “as available” basis. We may suspend, withdraw or restrict all or part of it for maintenance, upgrade or operational reasons, usually with notice on the site where the interruption is planned. We may add, change or remove features, including job board features and event functionality, at any time.

You are responsible for the equipment, software and internet connection you use to reach the site, and for keeping your own anti-virus protection current.

Papers, presentations, meeting summaries, standards references and technical articles published on this site are provided for information, education and professional development. They are not engineering, safety, legal, financial or career advice, and they must not be relied on in the design, operation or abandonment of any well, facility or project. Always take advice from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances, and follow the standards and regulations that apply to your operation.

To the fullest extent permitted by Nigerian law, we exclude all warranties, conditions and representations that are not expressly set out in these terms, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free or free of harmful components, or that any job listing, scholarship or opportunity described on it remains open.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Subject to that, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business or contracts, loss of anticipated savings, loss of employment or of any opportunity, loss of goodwill, or for any indirect or consequential loss, however arising. We are not liable for the acts or omissions of any employer, recruiter, sponsor, speaker, venue or payment provider.

Our total liability to you arising out of or in connection with the site and these terms, whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise, is limited to the total amount you paid to SPE Lagos through this site in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or fifty thousand naira, whichever is greater.

You agree to indemnify SPE Lagos Section 61, its officers, board members, committee volunteers and staff against any claim, loss, damage, cost or reasonable legal expense arising from your breach of these terms, from Content you submitted, or from your unlawful use of the site. This applies in particular to employers in respect of listings they post and candidate information they receive.

We may suspend or terminate your access to the site, an account, a listing or an event registration where we reasonably believe you have breached these terms, where a payment is reversed or disputed, where an account is being used fraudulently, or where we are required to do so by law. Where the law and the circumstances allow, we will tell you the reason and give you an opportunity to respond.

Termination does not affect rights or liabilities that accrued before it. The sections on Content, intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, indemnity and governing law survive termination.

These terms and any dispute arising out of them or your use of the site are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

1. 1Write to the section office setting out the dispute. We will acknowledge within 5 working days and aim to respond substantively within 30 days.
2. 2If the matter is unresolved after 30 days, either of us may refer it to mediation at the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse, or to arbitration by a sole arbitrator under the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023, seated in Lagos and conducted in English.
3. 3Failing that, the courts of Lagos State have exclusive jurisdiction. Nothing here prevents either of us from seeking urgent injunctive relief.

We update these terms from time to time: when the law changes, when we add a service, or when a clause proves unclear in practice. The current version always sits on this page, with its version number and effective date at the top.

Where a change materially affects your rights, we will give at least 14 days' notice by email to account holders, or by a notice on the site, before it takes effect. Continuing to use the site after the effective date means you accept the revised terms.
